Well, we had our very first WWOOFers (Willing Workers On Organic Farms) stay with us on the farm at the start of May. Charlotte and Maya are two French girls who are travelling around Australia over the next 5 months. We absolutely loved having them, and the kids adored them (especially Maggie who is the only girl!) They were in complete shock when they arrived and all of the boys came tumbling out of the house. We are also expecting another addition to our family in mid June, and they decided that I needed a nanny instead of farm workers! It was such a great way to bring the world into our home, and also get some long standing jobs done. They mulched 3 fence lines ready for planting of Tipuana trees with the next big rain. This will help us create more of a savannah on our grazing land and some much needed extra shade for our organic beef and lamb. We also got some mustering, painting, gardening and extra fencing done while they were here…..many hands make light...

March 2015 I will be in touch with all who have ordered our organic beef and lamb and keep you up to date with delivery dates and times. I have attached a photo with some of the kids in the backyard. They love to get out and help on the farm, and enjoy moving the cattle with Dan or bringing them into the yards to be weighed. It is one of the many benefits of running an organic farm – there are no stinky, poisonous chemical bins or areas that are a danger to children. Hope you all have a great week!...

Wow! What a month December was. Five inches of rain for the month, and the grass is lush and green and the Lucerne is growing like crazy. Our big organic beef boys are packing on the kilos, and Farmer Dan says that we should have some ready to harvest by the end of February, early March. If you’d like to order some 100% grass-fed, organic, locally grown beef, drop an email to info@laffyfamilyfarms.com.au. He has been busy replacing fencing and building portable shade structures for our cattle. The Angus cows have all calved and are looking extremely good. All the kids are home for the holidays, which I love! Sam is helping Dan, and learning to weld and fence and plant grass seed. Jim helps everyday with the fence and water check and loves going in the Gator with his dad. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. We are excited about this year and the growth and change we’ll see....

As Christmas draws ever nearer, the boys are busy finishing fences and shifting cattle on a daily basis. Although it has been a VERY dry year, we have seen such an improvement in our grass quality and longevity using holistic grazing management. Our organic beef steers are close to being finished, and we are looking forward to selling some of this fresh, local produce direct to our local communities. I have a lot of friends asking me when we will be selling our first packs of organic beef, and I had hoped we would have some finished for Christmas, but Farmer Dan tells me that they just aren’t going to be finished on time. Grass finishing organic beef cattle relies on abundant fresh spring grasses and legumes to provide the carbohydrates for the cattle to convert to fats and proteins. While we have had some nice little falls of rain, we haven’t had enough to produce an abundance of feed, and so in order for us to provide the best product we can, we just need to be patient and are hopeful that some of the big boys will be ready in the New Year. Dan and I are really excited to be launching this new arm of our farm business, selling organic beef and lamb, and can’t wait to make connections with other locals who are passionate about their food and health, and restoring local communities....
